Production & Commercialization

Production & Commercialization

The objective of this component is to:
  • sustainably increase the productivity of crop and livestock value chains
  • improve female and male farmers’ access to markets in the participating regions and woredas; and
  • enhance agricultural commercialization.
The Agricultural Growth Program (AGP) is designed to achieve the objectives of this component through activities undertaken in three of its sub-components:
  1. Institutional Strengthening
  2. Market & Agri-business Development
  3. Scaling Up of Best Practices
Crop production and productivity improvements will be achieved through measures such as scaling up of best practices, promoting use of fertilizers, increasing the availability and adoption of improved inputs (seeds and fertilizers), agronomic practices, and increased use of small-scale irrigation. In addition, appropriate land management to reduce soil erosion and improved agricultural productivity on individual farmland will be achieved by:
  • applying physical and biological soil and water conservation measures thereby restoring and sustaining soil fertility
  • improving water use efficiency in smallholder farming systems.
In the livestock sub-sector increased growth is expected to be achieved through:
  • improving availability of feed both in quantity and quality
  • provision of veterinary services
  • improved breeds
  • market infrastructure
  • enhancing value addition
