Addis Livestock Production and Productivity Improvement Service (ALPPIS)

ALLPIS is a privately owned company that is head quartered in Addis Ababa and opening in Bahirdar, Gondar, and Dire Dawa. ALPPIS partners with the Government and individual Artificial Insemination (AI) technicians to improve productivity through the supply of high quality genetic material through AI services. Ultimately, ALPPIS seeks to improve economic opportunity for smallholder and commercial dairy farmers through increased productivity.

Grant Support

Under the proposed project, ALPPIS aims to expand its AI service provision and to distribute 30,200 doses of semen (20,000 locally produced and the remaining 10,200 imported semen) to smallholder dairy farmers and commercial dairy farms. The project will sustain employment opportunities for existing public and private AI technicians that are located in regions; and ALPPIS will hire five additional AI Technicians who will be working in and around Addis Ababa. With an assumption of 1.5 inseminations per conception and 95% normal calving, 19,126 genetically improved calves will be produced, of which 50% (or 9,563) are expected to be female.

The service delivery will focus on dairy potential areas primarily in and around Addis Ababa including Debre Zeit, Selale and Asella and will be expanded to other potential and economically viable areas. AI service will be followed and strengthened through farm visits and provision of advisory services to farmers by breeding and reproductive specialists from ALPPIS. The work will be executed in coordination with the locally existing livestock development workers in the operating areas. Farmers will be provided with hands-on training to increase the productivity of their dairy farms. Veterinary drugs and artificial insemination equipment will be available at a fair price. By improving the production and reproduction performance of their cattle, smallholder dairy farmers will be able to increase their income and improve their livelihood.

The grant will be used to expand the innovative efforts of ALPPIS by funding the purchase of conventional and sexed semen for artificial insemination, AI technician capacity building, and other inputs and equipment.
